A method for designing flies may encompass notions of hydrodynamics and imaginative dimensionality. Consider the design of your fly, if under, on top or above the water, to be designed structurally for a particular type of movement. For instance, a soft hackle that is to be moved through the water may have a design that has a part of its structure in as many dimensions as possible. This has to do with the ballast of the fly- i.e., a structured “x.”

And, it may have to do with multiple dimensions of the fly’s particular existence (conception, imagination, creation and presentation). Consider the actual life of the fly when you’re imagining, designing and constructing it. Most of all, allow new ideas to emerge, change the vision of the fly and transform its original imaginative form.

Keep an open mind and picture the fish that is going to the eat the fly. Feel the joy when you’re tying the fly that you’ll feel when your line goes tight and jumps.
